Our lives are teeming with uncertainties, whether in the field of professional work, raising children, social relations or elsewhere. The difficulty with uncertainty is that we do not know in advance what circumstances might occur when choosing an alternative, that is, we have no information about the likely possibilities for each alternative. In other words, the available information is minimal, making any prediction of the best results very challenging.

Europe occidentale has been the theater of a massive exodus of people following the conflicts that erupted in Maghreb (Libye, Tunisie) and the Middle East (Syrie et Irak). Waves of migrants have crossed Turkey and Eastern Europe in search of the promised land, l’Europe. Many have ended up in France applying for asylum. In the countries located south and east de la Méditerranée, many of us think of France as an ideal world, a sort of a sacred land where people ruined by wars and misery journey to find peace at last and regain faith in life. It is perceived to be a refuge where unfortunate people from all over the developing world take shelter and enjoy at last “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.”

Trying to predict el futuro is like sailing the ocean with no compass to guide our ship. We are surrounded by nothing but water and darkness and still we hope there’s land and light somewhere in the world. Inevitably, there are momentos in our lives when we are just sailors following la dirección of the wind, with no specific harbor to dock in but seeking un destino nonetheless. We spend days, months, and years sailing around, thinking carefully about every step we have taken in the past and what our future steps will be.

In recent decades, many women who are now looking for a job were hired for a position when they were young and did not have babies. However, afterwards, many of them became pregnant. First, they had one, after a relatively short time they had another, and some of them, in an unguarded moment, had a third. Consequently, they had to decide which activity they would prefer, and, if they chose to bet on the “mother” work, the sad consequence was that they lost their job.

You have no idea that your complacency is based on an arrogance which the Titanic operators once had. Not long after your last flight travel, things start to change at an unprecedented pace in Turkey. A political confrontation drags the country from its secure port into the belirsiz waters of single strongman’s rule. Every day you hear about people from all parts of society being accused of terror. The strain leads to a foiled coup attempt, which further strengthens the one-man rule. The official gazette starts to publish the names of public officers that the government claims to be affiliated with terror. In each announcement by the official gazette, people rush to the website to check if their name is on the list as well.
And one night, while checking the table of so-called terror-affiliated people, you find your name along with tens of thousands of others. It is just a name in a long excel table – one single name among more than a hundred thousand people. But for you, this is the end of the life you have known so far. You lose your job and are prevented from getting a new one. You can’t benefit from general insurance. Your passport is canceled, and you are not given a new one. You are a social pariah, and people try to avoid having any contact with you.

Seven years ago, it was 6:00 am in the morning. The city was still sleeping. We took to the street. My mind was filled with these naive ideas I read from books and heard from intellectuals: We were putting things on the right track. We were writing our own destiny, we could make it to the other side of the river like all those other people on the planet. The plan was simply this: Move to the streets, occupy all the main squares, stay patient – some might be killed – stay strong – some would be detained… Eventually we were going to live happily ever after. We carried out every part of this plan, but the final scene did not unfold as we planned.
…
I ask myself over and over: What happened? Why couldn’t we make it to the other side of the river? I do not know and have decided to call myself “Ms. I-do-not-know.” If anyone asks me any question these days, I just reply: I do not know. Seriously, do you really buy this illusion that you know anything in this world? I know that you tidy your pillow every night and sleep on this fact. Sweet dreams. But you know nothing.

As far as I can see, this very tangled situación brings us that same sense of uncertainty. Everything seems to be entirely out of control. No simple solution appears to help.
Perhaps, this problema social multifacético we are all living through needs a complex solution that can be summarized in one word: compromise. Compromise by society as a whole.
Compromiso by individuals who should stop pointing and blaming others and try to assume their role of protecting children and helping them whenever they have the chance: in the street, on the autobús, at school, in the parque, every day, everywhere, all the time.
Compromiso by teachers who are in touch with children y adolescentes who need support from adults and cannot count on their parents, so they can picture a better life for themselves.
Compromiso by the government: feeding those kids, giving them una buena educación en la escuela, but mainly drafting laws that protect their human rights, returning their right to dream, to have hope en el futuro and to plan their destiny on their own.
Uncertainty will be the state of mind in my country as long as things remain unchanged. And since we are all parte de la sociedad, we are all part of the problem, but we should also be able to see that each of us plays an essential role in finding la solución.

L’incertezza of keeping a job, even if it is underpaid or stressante, also causes collateral damage like increasing problemi di salute, above all depression, or the spread of other negative feelings such as rabbia, fear, and frustrazione. The failure of our governo is the failure to understand that work gives dignity to human existence, it gives individuals the possibility to be relatively free. The incertezza of work leads to incertezza in life.

It is evident that democracy does not only consist in the formal organization of political elections every four years. As a state with tremendous cultural diversity, the basic democratic principles of popular sovereignty and integration of minorities should be permanently respected in Spain. The political crisis and the disruption of European funds supplied by the European Central Bank in the forthcoming months may induce a larger part of society to embrace the need for a new constituent process conducive to restoring Spanish popular sovereignty. This could make it possible to get corruption under control and pass legislation favorable to economic decentralization and the development of sectors such as renewable energy, ecological restoration, natural resources and water management, sustainable food production and rural tourism. In the hands of corrupt politicians, these sectors are regarded as markets that only benefit a few people.

Over the past 20 years Serbia has been one of the countries with the highest number of early elections in this millennium. Maybe we will end up in the Guinness Book of World Records. There’s a sense of urgency heating up the Politics of the Motherland’s System (PMS) in a country of highly racist,1 highly2 particularistic3 compatriots at the western side of “Middle East meets West” (central = Greece; eastern = Turkey; western = Italy) and no outdated coolin’ water trench system, whatsoever. Let us not dig deeper into the clogs deposited in the pelvic area of our politicians’ lymphatic system. And let us take time to lament unattended drainage systems in farming areas that are so clogged with weeds and unwittingly deposited garbage that every snow-melting season, no matter how mild the snow was, it produces massive tragic flooding in suburban and small town areas. And, of course, calls to campaign for crowdfunding to help out. And then there is the normalization of lingering on the receiving end of humanitarian aid while obtaining expensive loans for luxurious projects – that is also one huge part of the Current Political Climate.

In an age like ours, when fast-paced technological progress disrupts business and educational models; when old commonly held beliefs are upended and replaced; when traditional parties become obsolete, and social media and virtual reality capture an ever-greater portion of people’s time and imagination – how can we NOT talk about uncertainty?
But truth be told, certainty has always been an illusion in human life and endeavors. As a young immigrant to Germany, coming from a very short-term oriented culture, I was always bemused by the constant and pervasive talk of pension plans in this country. Who, after all, holds the key to their own future? Can anyone of us really control the future or even ensure we’ll be in it?

Let uncertainty be a point where we can choose a different direction! Let it be a limit where we can take a deep breath and just feel, not think! What will it feel like then? Like fear? Like relief? Just me and the world. Was it like a sort of power, but still civilized and enclosed inside of me? Yes, something like that.

When we do not feel the need to abolish anything – or to have the illusion of it – we find that everything that exists has its place, and even if we do not know it or we do not like it, if we can specify – somehow fix – our uncertainty, we can be ready to learn something new about ourselves or we can be willing to take better care of ourselves (and others) when confronting the unknown. Uncertainty could then become a technique of existence, a process during which we transform ourselves, a program, right, but one with an open end.

Maybe the most important thing that we lost is our self-love. Because, when you love yourself, you try to be the best version of yourself. You invest in your future. You work on your physical and psychological well-being. You put yourself first and you love yourself the most. In terms of your country, you protect your environment, you work on your education and you invest in your younger generations. You set goals to improve yourself (your country) and you work hard to accomplish those goals. Only occasionally do you look around and wonder whether your neighbors like you. Out of curiosity and nothing else. If they do, great, if not, you continue working on your progress. Because, it’s easy to blame others for our failures and to say that we are failing because others want us to fail. Finding courage in ourselves to start anew and to become the best we can possibly be is difficult. Therefore, we wait, while the dark clouds of uncertainty are diminishing our last hope of a sunny future.

I put a stop to these thoughts in no time and began to figure out the blueprint for freelance. It turned out I had nothing in my brain – I had no idea about this life. However, this kind of uncertainty encouraged me to explore more. I wanted to see what I could do if I fought for it. Age brings awareness de la realidad, thus crushing the innocence of los primeros años; however, for those who choose to reflect on the topic, it also provides a deeper comprensión of life. La vida is uncertain (random, fragile…); once this is understood y accepted, it only makes sense to live it on a daily basis and with an attitude positiva, whatever shade it acquires.

The new law has caused lots of people to shift from neutral to negative. There is always tension when talking about ourselves. We have to decide whether we can tell our colleagues the truth about our partner and be free in conversation. We may have to change our job even if we like it. Furthermore, we have to counter efforts where people look for homosexuals in particular and force them to leave their job, particularly if it is connected with children. Finally, it is also possible for people to be fired just because of their sexual orientation.

My story will address an environmental kind of uncertainty, the juxtaposition of short and medium term gains and long term losses. The origin of the story lies in a narrow geographical context, but the message it sends resonates globally.

Portugal has a long history of great utopian thinkers who might be of service to help us envision and cope with the idea of a workless society. There is a line of thinking in Portuguese intellectual history which started with Padre António Vieira. António Vieira is the originator of the myth of the so-called Quinto Império, the Fifth Empire. This spiritual empire would be the culmination of progress, and it would be led by the Portuguese. The idea was later taken up by Fernando Pessoa, one of our greatest poetas (and by “our” here I mean humanity’s). Its most recent proponent of note was Professor Agostinho da Silva, a figure who, despite being an absolute rock star in his time (as we would say in ours), isn’t as well known today as he maybe should be.

But what if that ground is suddenly pulled away from underneath you? What if one tiny moment means that your life will never be the same again? What happens then to all those promises of life you grew up believing in? To all those dreams you had? To all the plans you made for your future? What if they were all taken away from you to be placed in the hands of others? To be replaced by uncertainty? Would you not feel angry and betrayed? Would you not think that life is unfair? Most of all, would you not think: “Why me?” and “Why now?” What, if nobody can give you an answer to that?

Having been born and raised in a third-world country that underwent una enorme crisis económica, uncertainty became a part of my life at an early age. Splurging was out of the question as every peso had to be planned, saved and carefully spent. Your parents had a job and an income until, all of a sudden, they might not anymore. Living at the edge of the abyss while seeing your parents struggle and fearing that the following night your life might change completely, bred una generación of academic over-achievers and people seeking government employment.

The number of Lebanese nationals currently living abroad is around 800,000 – with a diaspora amounting to 14 million in second and third generation descendants – a high number relative to a population of only 4 million. A large percentage of Lebanese rely financially on a family member living abroad; the money that emigrants send back to their families accounts for around 16% of our GDP. For a country whose citizens are known for being proud of belonging to and loving their homeland, these numbers show how alarming the situation has become and how the government fails to implement plans that provide job opportunities to Lebanese and motivate them to stay.

Well, this is something I come to think about quite often: suicide.
No, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think about committing suicide, what I mean is that I think about suicide as a dimension, a door you open and close very quickly, which only people who actually do use that door can embrace. That is it: I find myself thinking about these people, their stories, how they do it and, above all, why they do it. What pushes them to their limits in such a powerful way that they need to be sure to die in the way they choose, and be able to stop bearing the uncertainty of tomorrow?

Many fresh undergraduates face the same question that I did: Should I get a master’s degree while I’m still familiar with the work from my bachelor’s degree or should I get a job first? Honestly, although a master’s degree may get you a fatter paycheck and give you (arguably) higher status, undergraduates sometimes have an easier time actually finding a job. Many of my friends with a master’s started with the same salary as I did when I graduated. But some of them later climbed quickly up the career ladder and ended up earning a lot more than an employee with a bachelor’s.

Bradley and Lynette’s story is not unique, but it provides a snapshot of the lives of millions of South Africans in the laboring class. It’s a tough life of long hours for little pay. But it’s a job. With an official unemployment rate of 24 percent, many people choose to endure difficult conditions rather than risk the onsekerheid of prolonged unemployment.

Uncertainty had painted all the roadmaps. I entered full existential crisis mode; something that I thought only had a place in my teenage years. You know that hollow feeling when you stare through the window and everything looks gray and half-dead? Well, I do live in England and it’s usually gray here, but you get the idea. It took me several months to understand that I had to embrace the magic of not having a clue in order to understand it. What do I want to do? Who do I want to be? Will I have a different answer tomorrow? I still don’t know, but I’m happy with it because it means I can be anything I like for as long as I want.

Another huge cultural difference is the idea that getting your paycheck in Croatia will happen, sooner or later, so just be patient and wait. And don’t complain, or else you might get fired and then you really won’t get anything. Logical? In the US, perhaps due to slavery, getting paid is an inalienable right. Even companies on the verge of bankruptcy will “of course” pay their employees. In Croatia, you can’t expect that. It all depends. Those who work in a hotel by the sea may wait for months until the summer season begins before receiving their pay from the following winter and spring. Maybe they will get half of their salary. Hopefully.

Although he has a laptop at home, Mr. Sharma is more at ease visiting the bank branch, but this visit had changed quite a bit with the long queues every day. The computer is not his cup of tea; while he cannot get used to holding a computer mouse in his hand, our Raju can hold a real mouse in his hand, but has never put his hands on a computer one. All these people are affected because they have no other way to exchange money after the demonetization drive started. They need real cash to pay the bills. And standing in a queue is the only way to beat uncertainty.

We have a lot to be concerned about. We are concerned about the voter that sells votes for a candy bar. We are concerned about a shopkeeper who does not want to give change. We are concerned about the OLD GUY, the guy that is used to making money on the side.
The corruption is heavily rooted in the Soviet era. We need a shift in our way of thinking. Will it happen to a fifty-year-old guy who does not see the problem of selling an official document? Will it happen to the traffic policeman who believes that taking money for a driving infraction is the right thing to do. Will it happen to the woman who believes that selling votes is okay?
We are going through a transition from old relations to something that has no name. I am afraid for the people in the country who will be astonished.

These confusing times have made me think about the difference between risk and uncertainty.
In risk we acknowledge some future possibilities.
We are not sure of the probabilities, but we may expect changes by choosing one future to trust.
In uncertainty we are not aware of any future possibilities.
We can´t predict the future and we can´t expect changes. We don´t even identify which option we might have.
There´s no trust. Just doubt. We simply don´t know.

“Más vale malo conocido que bueno por conocer” (a known evil is better than an unknown good) is a common phrase in Mexico, and it tells a lot about the way we think as a collective. We do not like change, we do not like uncertainty. For example, it is used when you hire someone who is not perfect for a job, but at least she is honest. Or someone who is always late with delivery, but at least she is good. People would rather deal with mediocre than take the chance of getting something worse. This state of mind also translates into personal decisions and relationships: many will stay with someone in a not-so-great relationship instead of facing the uncertainty of being single (because, at least he/she doesn’t cheat). The same can be said for our political decisions. For years we have maintained corrupt governors and parties because it is always better to be sure of something bad then to be uncertain of something good.

There is always inshallah (God willing), since everything is connected to God’s will. Blessed or cursed, there is no way to escape destiny. It is a belief, a way of life, a code of conduct and a virtue. Even when all the signs imply the outcome, inshallah is omnipresent. The belief in destiny is strong and predominant, yet it does not restrain progress. People plan, work and produce, but with every move comes inshallah. When setting up an appointment, a meeting or a date, the eternal word Inshallah will surface. Uncertainty lingers and is deeply-entrenched.

But there is no Ariadne giving us the thread to lead us out of this maze. There are only the words of our ancestors that it is much easier for us nowadays because we do not walk 16 kilometers to school and the same distance back home, because we have never been chased by wolves across the hill, and we do not know exactly how to play. Nevertheless, everything was much more certain for them because they knew what the only certainty was – to fight.

My generation did not have a happy start to life. The adolescent years were like expecting the light at the end of the tunnel. We jokingly said that it could be the lights of an upcoming train. The train did not arrive. Now as adults, instead, we try to find the exit to the tunnel we were forced into. The 3-decade veil of uncertainty was too heavy to tear apart. At breakthrough moments in our history, we always showed either unbelievable will power or an unbelievable instinct of self-destruction. We toppled the mafia, took down the government. Now we are standing at the gate. It is like entering the promised land. Moses and his people wandered for 40 years in the desert. We did 30 in uncertainty. We are almost there. Will we take the step? Will we be able to enter the gate? Or will we reawaken the self-destructive instinct? It is still uncertain…
